A Study in Procrastination

Why in the world did I wait so long to read A Study in Sherlock?

Surely my only excuse is that I didn't realize what joys awaited me there. The inimitable Laurie R. King and the tireless Leslie S. Klinger have put together a delightful Sherlockian smorgasbord of "Stories Inspired by the Holmes Canon" with something for every literary taste. Major categories include:
  • Traditional Watson point-of-view stories that could fit right into the Canon.
  • Twists on the Canon -- stories that give a different view on a canonical tale or don't fit in at all, often narrated in the third person or by someone other than Watson.
  • Modern-day stories with a Holmes connection, some of which are really good mysteries.
  • Period pieces featuring historical personages, such as one with Arthur Conan Doyle and another with a young boy whose name you most likely will recognize when it appears near the end of the story.
Defying characterization are a 35-page graphic novel and an afterword in the form of a Twitter exchange between the two editors. I didn't like either of those and I didn't finish reading them. But you may love them! That's the delight of this book. And you don't have to like every one of the 17 entries to enjoy the whole.

Many anthologies begin with an introduction to each story. This one doesn't. That's part of the fun, too. You never know what you're getting into when you start reading each tale.
