Doctor Watson, Detective?

As a charter member of the John H. Watson Society, dedicated in part to Watsonian scholarship, I'm planning a paper called "Dr. Watson, Detective." (Or should there be a question mark at the end, as above?) So please tell me: What is your favorite scene from the Canon that exemplifies Dr. Watson (a) showing sleuthing instincts, or (b) carrying out a sleuthing assignment from Holmes? And also: Is the Good Doctor a better detective than Holmes gives him credit for?

  1. I'd go with Watson's letters to Holmes from Hound of the Baskervilles, myself. He actually uncovers quite a few clues, and for once Holmes said so!

He can't have been completely incompetent anyway, or Holmes wouldn't have used him as emissary in the case of Lady Frances Carfax.
