A Monumental Sleuth

Sherlock Holmes at Baker Street Station

Great men deserve - and get - great monuments.

For example, there's a famous statue of Lord Nelson in Trafalgar Square. Less well known, at least to Americans, is another statue of the great general that stands in Bridgetown, Barbados. It was erected before the one in London.

I've been fortunate to have seen two great statues of Sherlock Holmes in person - one in London, outside the Baker Station of the Underground, and one near the Reichenbach Falls, Switzerland. Both are impressive in their own way, although the English one is far taller.

Recently I've seen photos of a third major monument to Holmes in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's home town of Edinburgh, Scotland. Some day I'd like to visit that one, too.

Are there any other major statues to Sherlock Holmes?

  1. I've heard a plastic one in my home city, Łódź, in front of a Sherlock Holmes pub, but haven't seen it with my own eyes yet ;-) I live in Sieradz now, 60 km from Łódź.
