The Reichenbach Fail

"It's at the Sherlock Holmes Museum in Lucerne, in Switzerland. You know it?"
"Yes," muttered Harold. "It's at the base of the Reichenbach Falls, where Holmes died. They have a complete recreation of Sherlock Holmes's study."

Many Sherlockians were offended by Graham Moore's 2010 best-seller, The Sherlockian, because of the way it exploited the unusual circumstances of a highly esteemed collector and scholar's death.

I have a different gripe. The Sherlock Holmes Museum referenced above has a major role in the novel. It even gets its own chapter. And it does exist. I've been there. My wife took the photo above there. And as you probably know, it's not in Lucerne.

The museum is actually in the delightful village Meiringen, which even Wikipedia knows is famous for being at the foot of the Reichenbach Falls with its Holmes connection. Not only that, "The Final Problem" specifically reports that Holmes and Watson stayed at Meiringen.

When I read The Sherlockian two years ago, it bothered me that the author moved the museum from Meiringen to Lucerne for no discernible reason. It still does.
