The Hounds of the Baskervilles
Movie mavens say The Hound of the Baskervilles has been filed more than any other novel. The number I heard was about 125. But there must be thousands of different editions of the book.
When one of our sons who shall remain nameless (but you know who you are, Mike) flunked a high school test on The Hound, he claimed he couldn't find a copy to read. So counted the number of copies in our home library. There were more than 40.
But that was long ago. Now I have 76, counting one-volume, two-volume, three-volume, and nine-volume sets of The Complete Sherlock Holmes. As I always say, you just can't have too many copies of The Hound of the Baservilles.
When the same aforementioned son, now much older, alluded to "the well-known fact that I have never read The Hound of the Baskervilles," I resolved to buy him a copy when we were on the moors. I did so, a nicely lurid paperback edition, and presented it to him earlier this month. He told me he'd already read it!
Well, you just can't re-read that book too often, right?
My favorite book of the Canon.
ReplyDeleteI don't have 76, but I do have several copies.
