Treasure From a Second-Hand Shop
I love small towns, which may be one reason my McCabe-Cody mystery series is set in one. It's always easy in such places to find enough book stores, antique stores, and second-hand shops to while away many pleasant hours.
And occasionally, one finds a treasure. Especially on the book shelves.
There's nothing particularly valuable about the volume above, which I bought Saturday in a shop in Millersburg, Ohio, with a very nice book section. It's an inexpensive Book-of-the-Month Club edition of the first Sherlock Holmes novel from 1994. But it is one of a set of nine, and I knew that I had eight of them. Was I missing this book or The Sign of Four? I couldn't remember, so I risked $4.00 and bought it.
And now that set stands complete on my bookshelves.
I remember a like experience on a trip to Maine. Came back with several Doyle books and a couple great sets. All of which I have not seen since.
