And now, my Sherlock Holmes in Italian

Gabriele Caredda, my Italian translator

On Monday I introduced you to two marvelous women who are translating my short story, “The Peculiar Persecution of John Vincent Harden” into Polish. Now meet Gabriele Caredda, who is preparing the Italian version. Since I can read Italian, I’m really looking forward to this one.

First, tell us a little about yourself – age range, where you live and go to school, that sort of thing.
I am 23 years old. I study translation and interpretation at the University of Genova. I am going to graduate in the three-year course and then start the two-year course, the specialization.

How and when did you first get acquainted with Mr. Sherlock Holmes?

I read The Hound of Baskervilles (in Italian) as a child, and watched the Disney movie The Great Mouse Detective, a really good way to introduce Sherlock Holmes to a younger audience. At the end of high school I was able to read books in English without a dictionary and since then I have never read anything translated to Italian. The BBC Sherlock TV series kindled my interest in reading the Canon again, this time in the form of a Complete Sherlock Homes Collection e-book.

How did you become a Holmes translator?

Last year I applied for the Sherlock’s Home internationalization project, and worked with three other people to translate the book, which has been published. Since it was an awareness campaign for the Undershaw Preservation Trust, we worked as volunteers. But what I acquired is far more valuable that any payment: experience and the pleasure of being part of this marvelous project.

How is the translation of “John Vincent Harden” going? Do you have an idea when it will be available?

The translation has been completed and it at its final stage of proof-reading. Next week I am going to put everything together and send the document to the publisher, who will then publish it according to his schedule.

What’s next on your translation agenda?

The contract with MX Publishing says I can translate other books of yours! When JVH comes out, I would like to hear from readers and perhaps we can decide what to do next. I am looking forward to translating other books of MX Publishing, but for now JVH is the only certain thing.

  1. I think Gabriele was the first one (from our group of translators of Shelock's Home) who started working on another book from MX Publishing, and the first one translating JVH.
    Way to go, Gabriele!
