Farewell to a Friend

Nino Catanzaro and a mutual friend at the Dartmoor visitors' center

We Sherlcokains often refer to death as "going beyond the Reichenbach." My dear friend, high school classmate, and incomparable neighbor Anthony "Nino" Catanzaro went beyond the Reichenbach on June 2.

Nino, a science fiction reader, wasn't a Sherlockian. But he sure knew that I was. Our home and my heart are filled with gifts that he and his wife, Angie, brought me to feed my obsession - a Sherlock Holmes pipe rack, a Sherlock Holmes key chain, a copy of The Hound of the Baskervilles bought on the moors.

This was typical of his thoughtfulness that made him such a great neighbor. Halloween, celebrated by building a fire in his yard and giving out candy in the driveway between our two houses, wasn't the same last year because of his illness. And it never will be again.

R.I.P., old friend.
