Quintessential Quotes: Dr. Watson's Turn

It was indeed like old times when, at that hour, I found myself seated beside him in a hansom, my revolver in my pocket, and the thrill of adventure in my heart.
-- "The Adventure of the Empty House"

When I started this blog two years ago, a regular feature was a Quintessential Quote from or (occasionally) about Sherlock Holmes. I stopped counting at 60 in honor of the 60 stories (although I later realized that I repeated a few). I still do one now and again.

Thinking a lot recently about Dr. Watson in conjunction with the formation of the John H. Watson Society, it occured to me that one could assembly a hefty compendium of interesting Quintessential Quotes from the Good Doctor.

The line above is an excellent place to start because it highlights exactly why Watson was the perfect professional partner for Sherlock Holmes -- always available, always ready for action, always armed. This is the man of action that we know, "the one fixed point in a changing age." The portrayal of Watson in "BBC Sherlock" as an action junky is not far from the truth, I think, and the quote captures that perfectly.

But this is only a beginning. I'd like to look at more Quintessential Quotes from Watson on an irregular base. So please help me out. What is your favorite quote by or about Dr. Watson?

  1. "What ineffable twaddle!" I cried, slapping the magazine down on the table, "I never read such rubbish in my life."
