The "Aye" of the Tiger

Around Christmas 1953, Christopher Morley visited the Sussex Downs looking for Sherlock Holmes's retirement cottage. In essay in the Saturday Review of Literature, he wrote about how he calculated its location. "The graph led us to Sherlock's favorite pub, The Tiger, in East Dean."

The vacationing Andriaccos and Winters visited that same pub last October. About 80 yards away, apparently closer than Morley's deduced location, stands a cottage with an oval blue sign out front bearing the words:

SHERLOCK
HOLMES
Consulting Detective
& Bee Keeper
retired here
1903-1917

It's an estate agent's office. The sign, a nice marketing gimmick, has been there about four years or so.

We stopped at The Tiger for a few words with the locals. It's 16th century public house with whitewashed walls and a red tile roof. We stopped in to chat. One of the patrons confessed, "Until I moved here, I thought Sherlock Holmes was a fictional character." He was a nice man, but obviously not well informed.
